Exposition of 1 Timothy Chapter Four- Bible Study

I Timothy Chapter 4

1Ti 4:1  Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

  • Spirit- the third person of the triune God, the Holy Spirit, coequal, coeternal with the Father and the Son
  • Speaketh expressly- Speaks outspokenly, distinctly
  • Latter times-  a fixed and definite time, the time when things are brought to crisis
  • Depart- to remove, that is, (actively) instigate to revolt; usually (reflexively) to desist, desert
  • Faith-  persuasion, that is, credence; moral conviction (of religious truth, or the truthfulness of God or a religious teacher), especially reliance upon Christ for salvation; abstractly constancy in such profession
  • Giving heed- to hold the mind towards, that is, pay attention to, apply oneself to, adhere to
  • Seducing- misleading, imposter, leading into error
  • Spirits-the disposition or influence which fills and governs the soul of any one
  • Doctrines-Teaching, instruction, precepts
  • Devils- evil spirits or the messengers and ministers of the devil, demonic being

1Ti 4:2  Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

  • Speaking lies-promulgating erroneous Christian doctrine, speaking falsely
  • Hypocrisy- the acting of a stage player; acting under a pretended part
  • Conscience-co-perception, moral consciousness
  • Seared with a hot iron- to brand, that is, to render unsensitive

1Ti 4:3  Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

  • Forbidding- to hinder, to prevent by word or act
  • Marry-To give oneself in marriage
  • Commanding to abstain- refrain, to hold oneself off
  • Meats-food, especially articles allowed or forbidden by the Jewish law
  • Created-manufactured, fabricate
  • Received- taken, participation
  • Thanksgiving- Gratitude, grateful language to God as an act of worship
  • Believe- Trustworthy, faithful
  • Know- to know, to recognize, become fully acquainted with
  • Truth- what is true in any matter under consideration

1Ti 4:4  For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:

  • Creature- created thing, formation, product
  • Good- beautiful, valuable for appearance or use
  • Nothing to be refused- cast off, rejected, thrown away, despised
  • Received with thanksgiving- Gratitude, grateful language to God as an act of worship

1Ti 4:5  For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

  • Sanctified- Made holy, purified, consecrated
  • Word- (Logos) the spoken word of God
  • Prayer- Supplication

1Ti 4:6  If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.

  • Put the brethren in remembrance- supply, suggest, to lay down
  • Minister- to run on errands; an attendant, that is, a waiter (at table or in other menial duties)
  • Nourished up- to educate, to form the mind
  • Words of faith-persuasion, that is, credence; moral conviction (of religious truth, or the truthfulness of God or a religious teacher), especially reliance upon Christ for salvation; abstractly constancy in such profession
  • Good doctrine -teaching , instruction
  • Attained- follow near, trace out, conform to

1Ti 4:7  But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.

  • Refuse- decline, shun, seek to avert
  • Profane- unhallowed, heathenish
  • Old wives’ fables- silly tales, myth, fiction
  • Exercise-to practice naked, to exercise vigorously, in any way, either the body or the mind
  • Godliness- piety, reverence, respect

1Ti 4:8  For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.

  • Bodily exercise – Physical training
  • Profiteth little- helpful or serviceable
  • Godliness– piety, reverence, respect
  • Profitable- helpful or serviceable
  • Promise- announcement, divine assurance of good
  • Life-life real and genuine, a life active and vigorous, devoted to God

1Ti 4:9  This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.

1Ti 4:10  For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.

  • Labour- to feel fatigue, to grow weary, tired, exhausted
  • Suffer reproach-to reproach, upbraid, revile
  • Trust-to expect, to wait for salvation with joy and confidence, hope
  • Savior- deliverer, preserver

1Ti 4:11  These things command and teach.

  • Command-Order, charge
  • Teach-teach, impart instruction

1Ti 4:12  Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

  • Despise-to contemn, despise, disdain, think little or nothing of
  • Youth- youthful age, newness
  • Example-a model for imitation, an instance for warning
  • Believers- Trustworthy, faithful
  • Word- (logos) the spoken word
  • Conversation-manner of life, conduct, behaviour, deportment
  • Charity-love, that is, affection or benevolence; specifically (plural) a love feast
  • Spirit- Mental disposition
  • Faith – persuasion, that is, credence; moral conviction (of religious truth, or the truthfulness of God or a religious teacher), especially reliance upon Christ for salvation; abstractly constancy in such profession
  • Purity- cleanliness, chastity, sinlessness

1Ti 4:13  Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

  • Attendance-to hold the towards, that is, pay attention to, be cautious about, apply oneself to, adhere to
  • Reading-a knowing again, reading
  • Exhortation-exhortation, admonition, encouragement
  • Doctrine- Teaching, instruction, precepts

1Ti 4:14  Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

  • Neglect- To be careless of, make light of
  • Gift-Spiritual endowment, religious qualification
  • Prophecy- a discourse emanating from divine inspiration and declaring the purposes of God, whether by reproving and admonishing the wicked, or comforting the afflicted, or revealing things hidden
  • Laying on of hands-official laying on of hands
  • Presbytery-The elders of any body

1Ti 4:15  Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.

  • Meditate-to take care of, revolve in the mind
  • Give thyself wholly-be thou
  • Profiting-progress, advancement, furtherance
  • Appear-apparent, publicly, externally

1Ti 4:16  Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

  • Take heed-hold upon, pay attention to
  • Doctrine- Teaching, instruction, precepts
  • Continue-stay over, remain, persevere
  • Save-deliver or protect
  • Hear- to hear, consider what has been said

I believe the reason why so many christians get drawn into into false doctrine is because a lot of them go to chruch on Sunday and listen to their pastor and checking to see if it lines up with the word of God.The sad part is that is how many christians get led into false doctrine.And another reason why people are led into false doctrine is because we have lost our first love.As christians we lean more into mans understanding instead of us letting God teach us.

  2. I really believe false doctrines come into a christians life because they don’t know the word of God and they can’t interpret the scriptures properly. I really believe we need to spend time with God and ask for wisdom,and He will reveal things to us.
